Taking care of your hairbrush is often neglected, even though it plays an essential role in hair health. A poorly maintained brush accumulates sebum, dust, and product residues, which can weaken hair and reduce its effectiveness. Fortunately, a few simple steps can extend its lifespan while keeping your hair healthier.
1. Clean your brush regularly
Regular cleaning is essential, ideally between once a week and once a month depending on your use.
Always start by removing hair caught between the bristles using a fine-toothed comb or a cleaning comb.
For classic brushes, dip only the bristles in lukewarm water with a mild shampoo and a little baking soda. Gently scrub with a cleaning brush, rinse, then let them dry bristles-down.
For wooden brushes, avoid immersion. Simply clean with a damp cloth lightly soaked in white vinegar.
2. Avoid excessive humidity
Humidity is one of the main enemies of hairbrushes, especially depending on their material.
Wooden brushes should never be immersed, as the wood can warp or split. It is also best not to use them on wet hair.
Pneumatic brushes also require attention: water can seep in under the cushion. Remember to press gently to drain the moisture.
In all cases, always let your brush air dry, bristles facing down, and avoid direct sunlight or heat sources.
3. Store it properly
Storage has a direct impact on the lifespan of your brush.
Store it in a dry place to prevent mold growth. Ideally, place it bristles down to limit dust accumulation.
Also, avoid leaving it near heating appliances such as hair dryers or straighteners, which can damage the natural bristles and deform the plastic.
4. Use mild products
The choice of cleaning products is essential to preserve the quality of your brush.
Opt for simple and effective solutions such as a mild shampoo.
However, avoid aggressive products such as bleach, as well as water that is too hot, which can damage the bristles, especially those of boar bristle brushes.
Quick Tip: between washes, spray a little dry shampoo on the brush, let it sit for a minute, then wipe it with a microfiber cloth.
5. Change your brush at the right time
Even with good care, a brush has a limited lifespan.
It is recommended to replace it every 6 to 12 months, depending on the quality and frequency of use.
As soon as the bristles or pins become worn, brittle, or misshapen, it's time to change. A damaged brush can break hair and make detangling less effective.
Why it's important
Cleaning and maintaining your brush isn't just about making it last longer. It also improves hair health by preventing the reaccumulation of sebum, dust, and bacteria.
With good habits, a well-maintained brush can last two to three times longer, while providing better results every day.
