10 Tips for Naturally Voluminous Hair
L’Artisan Brossier shares 7 tips to naturally add volume to your hair.
1 – Space Out Your Shampoos for More Volume 🧴
Hair produces natural oils that give it strength and shine. Washing your hair too often strips away these oils and weakens it. Dry shampoo or thorough brushing are effective alternatives to frequent washing.
As long as you use the right tools, boar bristle brushes help distribute natural oils from the roots to the ends, leaving your hair fuller, softer, and shinier.
2 – The Head-Down Trick ⤵️
To help lift the roots, rinse your hair and apply your hair products with your head upside down.
This technique stimulates scalp microcirculation while also lifting the roots away from the scalp, instantly boosting volume.
3 – Be Careful with Drying 💨
Dry your hair using the least aggressive method possible. The blow dryer can be a false friend: hot air tends to flatten the hair. Instead, opt for air-drying whenever possible, and avoid wrapping wet hair tightly in a towel, as this can cause breakage. Your hair will be stronger and more voluminous.
4 – Strengthen Your Hair’s Keratin 💪🏽
Keratin is the protein that makes up your hair, making it essential for healthy strands.
Brushing your hair with a boar bristle brush helps support the hair’s keratin structure. Since these bristles are largely made of keratin, they act like a natural treatment for your hair. Choose pneumatic (cushion-based) brushes to help create extra volume.
5 – Choose the Right Haircut 💇🏼♀️
Some haircuts naturally create more volume than others.
Long hair is rarely synonymous with volume. If you have curly hair, extra length can weigh curls down and flatten your hairstyle. The same applies to fine hair: long cuts tend to emphasize a limp effect. Instead, opt for shorter styles such as an angled bob or a mid-length wavy cut to add movement and body.
6 – Lift the Roots with an Afro Comb ➿
On dry hair, place the comb’s teeth at the roots and gently lift them to create volume. If you have curly hair, be careful to lift only the roots without disturbing or breaking up your curls by combing too far down.
7 – In Case of Absolute Necessity ⚡️
When you need an emergency volume boost, there’s always the classic backcombing technique. Using a fine-tooth comb, tease a few underneath sections from the ends toward the roots to create instant volume. Keep in mind that brushing against the natural direction of the hair cuticles is relatively aggressive, so use this method sparingly.
